Wednesday Recap (Hockey, Mike and Mike, and Philly)

Mike and Mike
Tuesday was probably the best show we've had on JC Sports so something had to offset it. And it didn't take long. The very first call on Wednesday's show is the same guy who was the first ever call to the show. And he ran out the same line. "Get this crap off the air; I want Mike and Mike back on." Then another call follows. "I agree with the last caller. I hate this show; get Mike and Mike back on."
After accidentally being disconnected I asked for Yankee Jerry to call back and he did. Although he let it be known he was Sal from Philly. So I asked him,” What do you like so much about Mike and Mike?" His response was dead silence. Finally after pondering such a complicated question he told me I hadn't brought up the hockey playoffs and all we ever talk about is football. We weren't more than 5 minutes into the show, but he was right we don't talk hockey on JC Sports.
I can understand why the Mike and Mike audience would not be interested in listening to JC Sports. This show is everything they aren't. Original, real, true, and most of it is improvisation. Who knows, I may have a co-host one day. But I can promise you'll never hear me take a black or white side just to have an easy debate. In some areas you can have a gray issue. Here's a typical day on Mike and Mike. Who's better Boston or New York?
Golic: Give me Boston because of their grittiness and I like their blue collar approach.
Greenberg: Ewww. Grittiness? Blue Collar? That's nasty. Give me a martini and put me in the skybox at The Stadium.
Golic: Skybox, are you crazy? Bleachers.
Greenberg: Skybox
Golic: Bleachers
Greenberg: Let's settle this debate we have Peter Gammons on for the 25th show in a row. Peter what's better the skybox or the bleachers?
Gammons, Golic, and Greenberg: All erupt in laughter about how one is fat and the other gay.
On a show last week Greenberg went on for an hour about coaching his kid's first little league game. Nobody wants to hear about my girlfriend giving me grief about not taking out the trash. That's the same crap you get on Everybody Loves Raymond. You like canned sitcoms? Then Mike and Mike and Everybody Loves Raymond are for you. Mike and Mike give you two predictable black/white sides to an issue. One canned take from the fat ex jock and the other from the clubbing metrosexual. Turn your television on ESPN2 for that crap or invest in XM radio.

And Philly guy we'll never talk hockey on the show. The season is 10 months long, you can't see the puck, and we are in Florida. There is a reason hockey is shown on the Ocho. I have no idea why people from the northeast think anyone down here cares about how great everything is up there. Philly is a city who has a huge inferiority complex with New York and is hell bent on taking it out on the entire country. They take pride in being white trash, and for some reason find it noble. When is the last time this city won anything? They have the Big 5 in College Basketball (none of them have been relevant in 20 years), Eagles (no SBs), 76ers (garbage), and the Phillies (nothing). They aren't nearly as accomplished as New York or Boston and are still bitter about the capital being a couple hours south. If you want to talk Philly sports then log on WIP and get bitter with them. I don't care how you do it up north. If it's so wonderful...go back.

John Madden Rookie Screen Shots.

Here are the screen shots of the first round draft picks. Obviously Derrick Harvey is eighth.

I always wondered what happened to Kelly Leak.

Kelly Leak/Steve Nash
Sorry, when I watch NBA games I get bored. But Steve Nash is so damn ugly and I thought to myself damn he looks familiar. Then I reached deep in my memory bank and remembered him terrorizing Walter Matthau.

Thank You

Hey it's JC and I wanted to thank all of the listeners and especially the callers for helping the JC Sports Show grow. Over the last couple of weeks the show has really started to take off. I couldn't have asked for a better show Tuesday morning from you guys. The phone was lit up all show long and you can see the bond we all have with the show. Luckily football season is only a few months away and soon enough we'll all get together at some bar and play some nerdy fantasy football. And of course some JC Sports tailgating before the Jag games this fall. Once again thanks to everybody and stay active on the show and blog. Your comments are always appreciated on the blog.

JC's 2008 NFL Mock Draft.

Okay, here it is. BTW, the better the team is the more fierce their logo is. Draft stupidity also makes your logo weaker.

Dolphins1. Miami Dolphins- JAKE LONG, OT, Michigan. No explanation needed.
Rams2. St. Louis Rams- CHRIS LONG, DE, Virginia. All signs point to Long. These first two picks are boring.
Falcons3. Atlanta Falcons- GLENN DORSEY, DT, LSU. Would be a great pick for the Falcons. They are getting the most talented player in the draft and putting some kind of talent on the line. Get your QB later. Don’t waste it in the first round when you don’t have an absolute stud. The last 10 years has shown us you can win with mid round QBs.
Raiders4. Oakland Raiders- DARREN MCFADDEN, RB, Arkansas. Old senile Al Davis is still making the picks. This move has bust written all over it.
Chiefs5. Kansas City Chiefs- BRANDEN ALBERT, OL, Virginia. When the Chiefs are back in the playoffs in 2-3 years and dominating the AFC West they will look back on the 2008 draft class.
Jets6. New York Jets- VERNON GHOLSTON, DE, Ohio State. One of the reasons they like him is New England does. They should quit worrying about what’s going on in Foxboro and correct their own problems. However, great pick nonetheless.
Patriots7. New England Patriots- DERRICK HARVEY, DE, Florida. With Gholston off the board the Pats go to the next best end and it’s right here. Belichick has a close relationship with Florida coach Urban Meyer and has taken quite a few of his Gators in years past.
Ravens8. Baltimore Ravens- RYAN CLADY, OT, Boise State. The Ravens need a QB and also realize you can get QB production with mid round picks. Clady will be the heir to an aging Jonathan Ogden.
Bengals9. Cincinnati Bengals- SEDDRICK ELLIS, DT, USC. The Bengals need to improve their defense and they get the second best interior lineman available.
Saints10. New Orleans Saints- LEODIS MCKELVIN, CB, TROY. The Saints defense is garbage. If they want to advance in the playoffs it has to improve. They traded for Jonathan Vilma (overrated), signed Dan Morgan (how old is this guy) and Bobby McCray (underachiever). That’s not going to cut it. Don’t be shocked if they trade up. They may try to make a splash and get local boy Glenn Dorsey.
Bills11. Buffalo Bills- DEVIN THOMAS, WR, Michigan State. The Bills really need a wideout but there isn’t anyone to select with this pick. In typical Bills fashion they reach and select somebody they could grab 7-10 slots later.
Broncos12. Denver Broncos- KEITH RIVERS, LB, USC. The Broncos have a fixation with athletic linebackers. Rivers is a perfect fit and they grab him.
Panthers13. Carolina Panthers- RASHARD MENDENHALL, RB, Illinois. Carolina needs a running back and he’s the best available.
Bears14. Chicago Bears- CHRIS WILLIAMS, OT, Vanderbilt. The Bears need an offensive line to block for their bad QB and soft running back. Williams is a little weak but that’s the easiest problem to fix.
Lions15. Detroit Lions- MATT RYAN, QB, Boston College. Ryan slips and gives Detroit the QB they’ve been waiting for. He’s the 2008 Brady Quinn. Ryan is crossing his fingers and hoping he doesn’t end up in Detroit. If the Lions pick him then have a hurse bring him to Detroit because that’s where he’ll be buried.
Cardinals16. Arizona Cardinals- MIKE JENKINS, CB, South Florida. Questionable character issues. He’ll fit it in great with the Cardinals. He does give their lethargic defense a boost.
Chiefs17. Kansas City Chiefs- JEROD MAYO, LB, UT. The Chiefs says they want their players to have instant impact. Both Albert and Mayo will be starting next season and be staples on the Chiefs for years. They could go defensive end but Mayo is the BAP.
Texans18. Houston Texans- JONATHAN STEWART, RB, Oregon. The Texans wise up and realize you should draft your running backs. This gimmick of signing 29 year old running backs is over. If this happens Houston will have the steal of the draft and go from 7-9 to 10-6. It still may not be enough to make the playoffs in the AFC.
Eagles19. Philadelphia Eagles- JEFF OTAH, OT, Pitt. The Eagles need a tackle. Runyan and Thomas are old and losing it. It’s need and BAP all in one for the Birds.
Bucs20. Tampa Bay Bucaneers- PHILLIP MERLING, DE, Clemson. The Bucs lost out on Jarred Allen and are having contract problems with Greg White. They sure up their pass rush with another need and BAP pick all in one. You never know with Gruden though. He may try to pick a QB for no reason.
Redskins21. Washington Redskins- DESEAN JACKSON, WR, Cal. The Redskins “need” a WR so they’ll reach and take one. If not for the Lions the Redskins would be the team everyone laughs at during the draft. When picking for either team smoke crack and hit your head with a hammer. After doing so you’ll see things they way they do.
Cowboys22. Dallas Cowboys- FELIX JONES, RB, Arkansas. Jerry Jones went to Arkansas so by his logic he must take an Arkansas player. Another meddling owner who doesn’t understand the draft.
Steelers23. Pittsburgh Steelers- GOSDER CHERILUS, OL, Boston College. The Steelers offensive line is terrible. Cherilus will end up playing on the right side and be a great run blocker. Don’t be surprised if the Steelers trade down. Maybe with the Jaguars.
Titans24. Tennessee Titans- ANTOINE CASON, CB, Arizona. The Titans need a DB and probably have Talib scouted a little higher. But do you think they are going to bring in a corner with a checkered past? Yeah, doesn’t sound like a problem they want to have.
Seahawks25. Seattle Seahawks- DAN CONNER, LB, Penn State. I'm not a huge fan of Connor but he's a safe choice. Slow linebackers who rely on playing smart make lots of tackles but they aren't difference makers.Jaguars26. Jacksonville Jaguars-KENTWAN BALMER, DT, UNC. The Jags need to build up the defensive line and he’s the best available during their pick. If a DE they want is available (Merling) they could trade up. The Jags have had long talks with Calais Campbell but won’t take him. The DE dropoff in the second round isn’t that big. The dropoff at DT in the second round is steep. You’ve replaced Marcus Stroud and will ease the pressure off the ends with the big push. Wise pick.
Chargers27. San Diego Chargers- AQIB TALIB, CB, KANSAS. Time for the Chargers to replace Drayton Florence. Hopefully he can lay off the weed.
Cowboys28. Dallas Cowboys- KENNY PHILLIPS, S, MIAMI. It’s time for the Cowboys to try and move Roy Williams to LB. He’s absolutely useless as a safety. Phillips is a good fit.
49ers29. San Francisco 49ers- LIMAS SWEED, WR, TEXAS. Nice slow receiver for a nice dumb team.
Packers30. Green Bay Packers- BRANDON FLOWERS, CB, Virginia Tech. Packers need help in the secondary. Charles Woodson turns 90 this year.
Giants31. New York Giants- CALAIS CAMPBELL, DE, Miami. The Giants stick with their theme and take another DE. You can never have enough.

Who Could This Be?

It's UF coach Urban Meyer and he's sporting a horrible stache. And he's not even wearing it to be funny. At one time he thought this looked good. Meyer was just a young pup playing college ball for the Cincinnati Bearcats.

JC's 2008 NFL Value Board

Please remember this is my opinion. I do not think the players will be drafted in this order. I am ranking the players on how good I project them to be in the NFL. The Mock Draft will be up in a few days. That will have players placed on where I think teams will take them. Be sure to post your value boards in the comments section.

Okay Here It Is:

The 2008 NFL Draft Value Board for The JC Sports Show:

1. Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU: Dorsey is explosive and disruptive. Remember back during the season when everyone had him as the first pick. The only reason he’s slid just a bit is because of injury concerns. He showed he could play through those and doesn’t having any lingering injuries. Think a bigger version of Tommy Harris. There are no holes in his game.

2. Jake Long, OT, Michigan: This is where the draft really shows it’s not as strong as years past. Any other year I have Long in the 5-7 range. However, he’s going to be a solid left tackle for the next 10-12 years. Pick him and your QB is protected for quite some time. He’s a little slow in the feet and I think that’s why Gholston torched him in the OSU game.

3. Vernon Gholston, DE, OSU: If his arms weren’t stocky and he was an inch taller the guy would be number one. Don’t compare him to Elvis Dumervil and Dwight Freeney because his arms aren’t as long. Mayock (NFL Network) has commented that he doesn’t show up some games. Well he’s a defensive end and they don’t dominate every game. Gholston is a hybrid. He’s bigger than a lot of smaller players but with shorter arms. He’s been compared to Mike Mamula, but Gholston was much more productive in college. His domination of Jake Long really helped out his stock.

4. Derrick Harvey, DE, Florida: Yeah, I’ve got him a lot higher rated than everyone else. Does anyone remember watching Justin Tuck dominate the Patriots? Harvey is the same player and a physical specimen who can put his hand on the ground or stand up in the 3-4.

5. Matt Ryan, QB, Boston College: Here’s a franchise quarterback for someone to grab. Depends on what your definition of the word franchise is. He’s not Peyton Manning but he could be a regular at the Pro Bowl. The guy has a cannon for an arm and has all the tools (heigth, decision making, scrambling ability etc.) you want in an NFL QB.

6. Leodis McKelvin, CB, Troy: A shutdown corner. He’s fast and explosive. Only concern is he’s a little short. That could be a problem in a league where corners and WRs are becoming more physical. McKelvin is battle tested though. Troy faced top talent with their out of conference schedule which consisted of Florida, Oklahoma State, Arkansas, and Georgia.

7. Jonathan Stewart, RB, Oregon: He has a couple of nagging injuries but so did Adrian Peterson. Stewart is big and runs low to the ground making him my favorite running back in the draft. He's a Steven Jackson clone. His second burst past the linebackers has been questioned so that’s where he’s a bit behind Jackson. However, he’ll average over 4 yards a carry and he’ll be able to carry the load 20-25 times a game. He’s a franchise running back and a steal for whomever out of the top 10 ends up drafting him.

8. Brandon Albert, OT, Virginia: He’s not really a guard or a tackle. That’s what makes him so good. Albert is fast and can fly across the field laying out blocks on counter plays after they’ve developed and lay out linebackers and safeties down field. Also let me point out Mike Mayock is the first analyst to recognize how good this guy is. It’s why I watch Mayock. He actually evaluates the talent and will project a guy lower or higher after watching film. McShay and Kiper make some phone calls and wait for a source (text message) to tell them somebody is flying up. Mayock is a leader and has the foresight to see a player is over or under valued.

9. Dominique Rogers Cromartie, CB, Tennessee State: This guy dominated the senior bowl and flew up the draft chart. Before that he was a second round pick. His size is what makes him so valuable. He’s going to be able to match up against the physical receivers like Moss, T.O., and Braylon Edwards. He looks like an NFL CB. Only scare is the school he came from.

10.Chris Long, DE, Virginia: I really don’t get it (daddy’s boy). He’s not that big, fast, or dominant. He’s actually shorter than Vernon Gholston and not much faster than a much bigger Derrick Harvey. He does everything pretty well, and nothing great. He’ll be an every down defensive end which is the most premium position in the NFL right now. There aren’t many of them so I have him in the top 10. Think Justin Smith.

11. RYAN CLADY, OT, Boise State: Solid tackle
12. SEDRICK ELLIS, DT, USC: Explosive in the backfield
13. DAAREN MCFADDEN, RB, Arkansas: His off field actions and straight up running style do nothing for me. However, his college resume is impressive.
14. PHILLIP MERLING, DE, Clemson: Solid defensive end who already looks polished. Nagging injuries are a concern.
15. RASHARD MENDENHALL, RB, Illinois: Solid running back without breakaway ability. Isn’t anything great but you aren’t gambling here. You know what you’re getting unlike McFadden...just not as much upside.
16. BRIAN BROHM, QB, Louisville: Like Mendenhall you know what you’re getting here. Concern is injury problems. He’s had surgery 3 times throughout his college QB. He has good size and a solid arm. One thing I’m worried about is he could have been the product of a system.
17. CALAIS CAMPBELL, DE, Miami: He has great size but plays a little high. They said the same thing about John Henderson.
18. JERROD MAYO, LB, Tennessee: Very athletic player. Probably the best player in the draft you haven’t heard much about. I think he’ll have a couple of pro bowl appearances. He’s a guy who has a non stop motor. Remember Dexter Coakley from the Cowboys? Same player who never quits. However, he’s undersized and like Coakley will probably burn out after about 5-6 years. Best case scenario he ends up like fellow Vol Al Wilson and is a solid/great player for several seasons.
19. CHAD HENNE, QB, Michigan: Great size with a great arm. I have him valued a lot higher than other sites. His accuracy is a question but that can always be corrected. His release is quick and it helps cover the fact that he stares down his targets. If you are going to have questions/problems about a QB those are the ones to have. If they are fixed he will be the best QB in the 2008 draft class.
20. CHRIS WILLIAMS, OT, Vandy: I’d have him a lot higher if he seemed a bit more intense. He just looks soft to me. However, he has all the physical tools you want in a tackle. If this guy develops a mean streak he could be the best tackle in the entire draft. He wasn’t too strong at the combine but you can always fix that. But can you make him mean?
21. KEITH RIVERS, LB, USC: Same thing with Chris Williams. He has all the tools but he seems soft. He’s aggressive but isn’t mean. He could be the best linebacker in the draft and will probably be a 6-10 pick. However, he’s a workout freak. He was the number one linebacker coming out of high school and is again. Problem is he’s not the best linebacker on the field.
22. KENTWAN BALMER, DT, UNC: He takes plays off but is a beast. He’ll be a solid tackle in the league for years as long as he doesn’t underachieve.
23. DEVIN THOMAS, WR, Michigan State: You haven’t heard his name much but he’s explosive. If he played for a more successful school I think you would be familiar with him. He’s going to make a great kick returner and deep threat for somebody.
24. RAY RICE, RB, Rutgers: He’s short but not small. They said the same thing about Maurice Jones Drew. He’s not as fast but he’s more powerful. If Rutgers didn’t run him into the ground I’d have him higher. The guy is a steal in the second round. I actually like him better than McFadden but will keep him here so I’m not called insane.
25. QUINTON GROVES, DE, Auburn: Great size and will be a disruptive force in the backfield. But he only works in a 3-4 system.
26. JEFF OTAH, OT, Pitt: Almost everyone has him higher. I don’t think he can move all that well. At the combine the guy could barely squat. However, he’s strong and powerful and was absolutely dominating at Pitt.
27. KENNY PHILLIPS, S, Miami: He really fell off his junior season. He also plays high. But he’s solid in every other part of the game. He’s fast, can tackle, and cover. Will be a safe pick for somebody.
28. CURTIS LOFTON, LB, Oklahoma: Just like Jerrod Mayo but he doesn’t have the same speed. Which is why he’s about 15 spots lower.
29. JOE FLACCO, QB, Delaware: Has a great arm and has great size for a QB. Best scenario is Ben Roethlisberger and worst is Byron Leftwich. That’s a huge difference. He looks a little goofy and his feet seem to be behind the rest of his body. But his arm and size make him a “sexy player.
30. GOSDER CHERILUS, OT, Boston College: Great run blocker and he’s powerful. He’ll probably move over to right tackle and I think eventually guard. I’d compare him to Maurice Williams of the Jaguars. He won’t do much at tackle because he’s weak against speedy rushers but his power will make him a great run blocker.
31. TREVOR LAWS, DT, Notre Dame: His tackle numbers at Notre Dame are a bit deceiving. He was playing a lot of end and standing up in the 3-4. You know he’s versatile and will be a solid contributor and provide great depth for someone on the line for many years playing both end and tackle.
32. DAN CONNOR, LB, Penn State: I’m not a huge fan of these unathletic Penn State linebackers. Yeah, they rack up a bunch of tackles but it doesn’t do much good when they are always making them 5 yards past the line of scrimmage. He’ll be a solid player for somebody but nothing spectacular. That’s not the kind of player I look for in the first round.
Players receiving votes: Aqib Talib, Antoine Cason, Felix Jones, Mike Jenkins, DeSean Jackson, Brandon Flowers, Malcolm Kelly
Most overrated player: Limas Sweed...I wouldn't pick this guy on the first day much less the first round.

Value Board Coming Friday.

Coming this weekend I'll rank the top 32 players in the draft. Yes, there are only 31picks thanks to those cheating Pats. But I'm used to 32 picks so that's what we're sticking with. I'll keep the same value board up unless a player is injured or is arrested for murder. I have no idea why players move up and down in the draft after they have worked out. My theory is these "draft experts" (Kiper, McShay, Mayock, Davis) didn't get the "inside" info on the players. Teams don't collectively sour on a player for no reason.
So the draft board will be up this weekend which will be followed by the mock the following weekend. If I had my way teams would take the Best Available Player (BAP) 99% of the time. But half of them have to be below average meaning they have to make below average decisions (Cleveland, Detroit, Washington).

Well here is your 2008 Jaguars schedule!

The Jags were royally screwed with the NFL schedule.
Despite going to the playoffs and being a trendy Super Bowl pick we're left with 3 primtime games. First of all the Jags lose out on the Thanksgiving Day game to Vince Young. Does anyone find this guy to be any good? Anyone? Here's a good joke for you. What is 21 and 31? Vince Young's TDs to INTs. There's not one ounce of NFL QB in this guy.
The Bears and Browns have 5 primtime games a piece. Why? So many questions without no logical answers. The Jags have a Sunday Night game vs. Pitt (first regular season game on NBC for the Jags), Monday Night game at Houston (man those Monday games have become horrible) and a Thursday homegame against Indianapolis. I can't get over losing the Turkey Day game. My disdain for Vince Young keeps growing. I'll be ranting like a mad S.O.B. on tomorrow's show. Be sure to tune and call in.
